The Vending Machine Business: Looking At Its Benefits vs. Limitations

June 3, 2011.

We’ve heard about the rags-to-riches success stories of business tycoons. How they started with nothing or with just small home-based businesses and turned them into multi-million industries.

Their inspiring stories encourage many people to resign from their job, set up their home-based business, hoping to eventually be like them.

Who didn’t dream of becoming their own boss and having their own time? What they don’t anticipate are the probable setbacks or failures. You may think that simple businesses, like vending, mean less time for developing your business blueprint. What do you still need to learn, anyway? Just purchase these machines, set them up on your identified sites and voila! It will already generate your expected income. Remember that, to succeed in the vending machine business, you need to study and carefully weigh its benefits and limitations.

Some benefits:

  • It’s an easy start-up
  • You’re the boss
  • You own your time
  • Minimal starting capital
  • You can start while still employed

Some limitations:

  • It’s an easy start-up = plenty of competitors
  • You’re the boss = you’re blamed for its failure
  • You own your time = requires effective time management skills
  • Minimal starting capital = tougher competition
  • You can start while still employed = slower business growth due to divided attention

This is just a sneak peak of what could happen. Everyone hopes to become a vending machine owner, but most of the time, that aspiration doesn’t materialize. This is because you need to put much time and capital to get a vast location to compensate for your full-time job earnings. Remember that, to make a sustainable profit, you need to have 500 operating vending machines. This means sufficient capital and time to set-up these machines. Therefore, for you to have a fair chance to succeed, you need to set a more practical business approach.
